The Engagement Dress

January 30, 2008

The past few days have been especially busy for me. I’ve been swamped with work and my sweetie has been out in Los Angeles for work, so I have had my mind on plenty of other things!

So, getting back to our story…

As all this research, considering, and planning was being done (to get that gorgeous ring on my finger), I had to make a trip to Gainesville, Florida for business. My uber-cool hip friend, Melissa (who will get the “uber” reference, I hope), and I were in the local mall searching for the perfect outfit for Melissa’s upcoming (at the time) appearance on television (yes, she is also very famous). During this trip I was shocked at how the Gainesville mall has transformed over the years – there is a Coach store, people!!

So we happened into the Banana Republic, and the first thing I hear, let alone see, is Melissa pointing and yelling at the top of her lungs, “You should get married in THAT dress!!!!” (Ok, so maybe she wasn’t yelling at the top of her lungs – she has taught me much about the art of embellishment…)

So I, and about ten other people, turned to where she was pointing and saw the cutest dress ever. We’ve coined it “The Engagement Dress” since it is so fabulous. Here it is:

It’s silvery grey, beaded, not too many sequins, sheer, very flapper, and was more than what I wanted to spend that day! It was our theory that I should buy this dress and WEAR IT EVERYDAY until my sweetie proposed, just so I would be wearing it when he popped the question.

The ring and the dress match perfectly! So Melissa and I fantasized, joked around, and I kept that dress in the back of my mind…

Oh, and Melissa got a cutie cute sweater there that day, and although I didn’t get to see her television debut, I bet it was fabulous!

The Unofficially Official Engagement

January 27, 2008

So after what seemed months of anticipating an engagement proposal (based on my email stating that the “Ballerine” was the ONLY ring for me), my sweetie came upstairs (after tossing a balled up piece of paper at me) to my work area and told me that if I wanted a ring on my finger anytime soon, I had better get to work figuring out just how we would have it made (since we were a little wary of spending $25,000)!

How romantic, right?! Your heart could just melt…Anyway…

I did, however, get right to work – opening my mouth and spreading this non-news to just about anyone who would listen!

“We’re looking for the ring!”

“ We’re shopping around!”

“ We’re having it made! (I think!)”

So there it was, we were officially but unofficially engaged, in early November 2007.

And then the wheels began turning and I knew we could pretty much have the ring made, so I went to work researching whether I wanted white gold or platinum, what shape and quality of a diamond, and where (and how) we should have this ring made. All the little stuff.

I still didn’t have an idea of how much the ring would cost. Basing it on $25,000, my head was spinning. And I think maybe my sweetie was having regular anxiety attacks as well (maybe about the cost, maybe not), although he will never admit it.

Nonetheless, the damage was done. My sweetie had set the stage for the whirlwind engagement…that was yet to come.

Discovering the Ring…

January 26, 2008

Well, finding “the” ring was not too difficult.

And it came entirely as a surprise when I found it, but somehow I knew that it was made just for me.

Sometime in early to mid 2007, I was doing some research for a project I was working on at the time and came across it! It was “the” ring! The only problem was…how could we ever afford a $25,000 minimum engagement ring? (That’s for the setting only, in white gold, with no center stone – eek!)

At the time, we had only talked about the prospect of getting engaged and the idea of getting married. At the time, we had been together more than 4 years and the conversation had come up between us, with friends, with family several times. So, it wasn’t like the idea of looking at what I liked in the way of rings was me being some psycho girl.

But it also wasn’t like we were already engaged and we had to think about buying this ring, which could have been a down payment on a house, a car, someone’s college tuition…

Anyway, I fell in love with this ring. I loved the name, everything about it. The “Ballerine.” How lovely. How graceful. How “Audrey Hepburn“. So, I sent the images to my sweetie in an email that read:

“This is the ONLY one.”

A girl can dream, right?

It’s Also a Blogging Whirlwind…

January 25, 2008

Since we (me mostly) are new to the blogosphere and keeping up with our own blog, it may take me a little bit to get fully used to getting everything put up here.  We already have some ideas for the next couple of posts — I just have to write them first!

We are both so busy right now, but we promise to try to post a little something everyday.  The next post will probably cover the engagement story, or at least leading up to it…

Until then!

Check back often, and I promise to keep everyone up to date on how things are going, what wedding projects we’re working on, and how our progress is coming.
